November 1, 2008
Vancouver. The BC Wildlife Federation welcomes the designation of Jim Prentice as Minister of the Environment and Gail Shea as Minister of Fisheries and Oceans as part of the Federal Cabinet shuffle after the recent election.
Mel Arnold, BCWF President stated that, "The BC Wildlife Federation is pleased with these announcements as Jim Prentice has long experience with the issues affecting Western Canada and particularly aboriginal affairs, environmental protection and land claim negotiations. It is encouraging to hear Minister Prentice declare himself a conservationist and as caring about the outdoor lifestyle."
"With regards to Gail Shea, we know about her experience in fisheries, intergovernmental affairs and transportation - all issues that affect conservation. West Coast fisheries are currently presenting significant challenges and the BCWF would welcome the opportunity to be an active partner in resolving some of those challenges. We look forward to a meaningful and productive working relationship with both of these new ministers," said Arnold.
The BCWF is actively working on many issues, including Land Management Plans, conservation of fish and wildlife and defending public access to crown land and resources. All of these issues are important not only to the BCWF membership but to the health and welfare of all Canadians.
