The Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE) Program

Five steps to a BC resident hunter number (March, 2009)

Step 1
  • If student is 18 years of age or older it is recommended that the student successfully completes the Canadian Firearm Safety Course (CFSC) prior to registering for the Conservation Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE) program. Students 14 years of age or older must have the CORE course to hunt in British Columbia.
Step 2
  • Go to "Examiners list" on the BC Wildlife Federation website www.bcwf.bc.ca and locate an examiner in your community. Costs and schedules may vary between examiners, so you may contact more than one. A student has the option to challenge the CORE exams and there is a $10.00 dollar fee per exam. Challenges are not recommended for students under 18 years of age.
Step 3
  • After successful completion of the CORE course or CORE challenge the student should send the white copy of their registration form to the BCWF office with a $30.00 dollar administration fee to receive their CORE certificate.
Step 4
  • The student then takes their CORE certificate with photo I.D. to a Government Agency. Parent or guardian must accompany student if under 18 years of age. Proof of students CORE certificate allows them to receive a "Hunter Number Card." There is no charge for this transaction as administration fee has already been paid to BCWF.
Step 5
  • The student can now use their "Hunter Number Card" to apply for "Limited Entry Hunting" (LEH) and/or to purchase a hunting licence and species licence (if under 18 a parent or guardian must be present). After this purchase the student is legally allowed to hunt during a hunting season as indicated in the B.C. Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis.
Junior Licence
  • A Junior Hunting Licence can only be issued to a parent or guardian on behalf of his /her child or ward who is 10 years of age or older and under the age of 14. The junior hunter need not have completed a hunter training program but must be accompanied and under the close supervision of an adult who carries the proper licences. Wildlife taken by the junior under this licence is included in the bag limit of the accompanying licensed adult.
All hunting and species licences expire on March 31st of each year.
