The Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE) Program

CORE Lesson Plans

The Hunter Safety Training Regulations prescribes that the CORE Program consists of a practical firearms handling test, and a written examination on all of the following subjects:

(a) outdoor ethics and game care

(b) firearm handling and archery equipment

(c) hunting regulations;

(d) animals of British Columbia;

(e) birds of British Columbia;

(f) outdoor survival, first aid & field craft

(g) hunter heritage, conservation and wildlife management

The CORE Program does produce and print a CORE Manual.
This manual covers the CORE Subjects listed above.

Since no formal CORE Course exists in legislation, it can be taught by any individual. Only those individual appointed as an examiner may provide the written and practical exams. Many of the CORE Examiners also teach the CORE Subjects.

In order to assist in teaching the CORE Subjects, lesson plans have been developed based on the 2002 edition of the CORE Manual. These lesson plans were developed, tested and modified during two CORE Courses in the fall of 2003. They are a work in progress.

These lesson plans were written using the following parameters:
  1. The lesson should be between 30-60 minutes in duration.
  2. The lesson plans should be written in an electronic format, which could be easily altered so the instructor can tune the lesson plans to his or her requirements, teaching style, level of experience, etc.
  3. The lesson plans should include overhead transparencies.
  4. The lesson plans are only suggested lesson plans and are not mandatory for use by CORE Examiners.
