The Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE) Program

Lesson Plan Layout

At the start of the lesson plan you will find a box which has the following information:
  1. Objective
  2. Reference
  3. Training Aid resource required
  4. Safety precaution
  5. Overview of the lecture
  6. Parts of the lecture
  7. Time allotment
This should help the instructor prepare the lecture and obtain any necessary training aids.

Lesson plans generally have three parts. They are the introduction, body and conclusion.

The introduction will generally consist of reviewing the previous lecture and introducing the objective of the new lecture. The instructor will have to add in the motivation factor for the lecture and then explain how the lecture is laid out (the parts of the lecture) during the introduction. For the motivation factor remember to explain and answer the 5 W's and How (who, what, when, where, why, and how).

The body of the lecture may be broken into several parts. Breaking it into parts will give a bite size portion for the student to swallow. At the start of each part, introduce that part and motivate the student. At the end of each part, give a conclusion e.g. ask a few questions. Make sure the student has learnt the teaching points. The novice instructor might wish to modify these lesson plans to include an introduction and conclusion for each part.

The conclusion of the lecture is the opportunity to review the teaching points, assign homework/assignments, and introduce the next lecture. The instructor may wish to add questions into the conclusion of the lecture to ask the students.

At the end of the lesson plans is a list of OHT. The OHT if used, will help to explain the teaching points. A good teaching method is too talk about the teaching point, show it on the OHT, and then demonstrate it with a teaching aid, e.g. There are three parts of a rifle (stock, barrel, and action). See these parts on the OHT. Now look at this rifle and identify these parts.
