Objective 3: Respect the power, speed and intelligence of bears. (Attitude)

Key Points
  • These points can be emphasized throughout the lesson.

  • Grizzlies have been clocked at 35 miles per hour. It takes about 1 second for a grizzly to cover 16 m. Bears can run 66% faster than the world's fastest runner. In most circumstances, running from a bear is a bad choice.

  • Bears are able to figure out how to get into "bear-proofed" cabins and caches. They are resourceful and intelligent when motivated.

  • Bears are able to rip open vehicles to get to food inside (a persistent problem in Yosemite National Park, California).

  • Information on attacks (from this component introduction) could be included here.
Learning Activities
  • Class discussion of photos showing power and intelligence of bears.

  • Most of the activities in the other objectives will give you an opportunity to develop this attitude in your students.
Teaching Aids
  • Collected cut out photos.

  • Bear Aware video shows a diagram of the fastest human compared to a grizzly.

  • The NFB video Bears and Man has a good scene of a black bear mother opening a dumpster lid.

  • Safety in Bear Country includes lots of good footage showing bears' power, and speed.
Suggested Evaluation
  • Ask questions throughout the lesson to make sure students have or are developing this attitude.
