2010 Wetlands Institute in Kamloops a success across the community!

Planting around newly constructed wetland
BCWF’s 2010 Wetlands Institute in Kamloops from May 31 – June 6th was a terrific success!
14 full-time participants attended for the week (along with many daily drop-ins) to learn about: wetland mapping, amphibian surveys, vegetation surveys, cattle ranching effects on wetlands, Mountain Pine Beetle impacts to hydrology and how to construct wetlands from start to finish. Tom Biebighauser came from Kentucky to instruct participants about the benefits and techniques of wetland construction. These construction techniques were utilized on the Kamloops Indian Reserve as well as on private property near Barnhartvale.
Please stay tuned for more updates and photos on these fantastic projects.

The
Wetlands Institute is a 7-day hands-on program that educates participants about
wetlands stewardship and wetland construction skills. Participants are encouraged
to come with a wetland project that they can implement upon returning home from the Institute.
Since 1998, the Institute has been held bi-annually in selected communities across
British Columbia. Participants spend most of the week in the field learning about
the importance and diversity of wetlands, practicing up to date field techniques to
inventory wetlands vegetation mapping, water quality, soils, birds, amphibians, and
fish. Most importantly, participants discuss ways to contact and communicate with
landowners and developers and to raise public awareness and influence conservation
policies.
|
| Within the selected
host community, several different wetland sites are visited during the week to highlight
different restoration, conservation and education methods. Upon completion of the Institute,
participants from all types of backgrounds are fully trained to begin wetland projects in
their home communities!
